Decking the Halls Too Soon?

The holidays are just around the corner. Or, maybe they’re already here? It seems that holiday decorations are popping up in stores, malls, on streets and homes earlier than ever before. I was in Macy’s two weeks before Halloween, and the trees were trimmed and the holiday tunes were already humming.

Not all stores have signed on for an early holiday season. Apartment Therapy posted a notice from the department store, Nordstrom that read:

“At Nordstrom, we won’t be decking our halls until Friday, November 27. Why? Well, we just like the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time. From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.”

According to the National Retail Federation, nearly 40 percent of Americans plan to start their holiday shopping before Halloween this year, and nearly 40 percent will start in November. Is the early arrival of the holiday spirit in some stores, an attempt to cash in over a longer period of time to make up for poor sales this year? If that’s the case, should we jump on the bandwagon and start decking the halls of our own homes earlier?

I’ve been noticing more and more home decor articles advocating for decorations that play double duty – from Thanksgiving Day to New Year’s Eve.
